Differences from the ATPL theory
ATPL/IR syllabus is considerably more extensive:
- Polar regions, convergence, departure and gridded maps.
- IRS / INS (inertial navigation).
- Deeper PBN (RNAV, RNP specifications, AR APCH).
- Doppler navigation, Loran-C.
- More worked examples.
PPL Monkey Subject 060 covers PPL level. ATPL deepening in planned Subject 200 (Phase 2).
EASA examination
Subject 060 is examined in the PPL theory exam with typically 12 multiple-choice questions (varies by authority). Pass mark: 75 % correct. In some states navigation is combined into one exam with other subjects.
Practical examination
The practical PPL exam (Skill Test) tests navigation in:
- Cross-country leg with PLOG.
- Track correction with 1-in-60.
- Lost procedure demonstration.
- VOR tracking (if VOR on board).
- GPS operation and backup procedures.
